New Production! Palace Opera & Ballet is delighted to open the 2025-26 Cinema Season with Damiano Michielettos exceptional world premiere staging of the gripping new opera from Francesco Filidei- a co-commisson between La Scala and Opra de Paris. Based on Umberto Ecos award-winning medieval thriller, the story follows a 14th Century Franciscan friar William of Baskerville (Grammy Award-winning baritone Lucas Meachem) and his apprentice Adso (star mezzo-soprano Kate Lindsey) as they investigate a series of mysterious deaths among the monks at a remote monastery, uncovering a labyrinthine library and a web of secrets. Immersive and texturally rich, Filedeis composition is built on a symphonic base, layered with a series of arias and recitatives that transform traditional Gregorian chants. Follow the fantastical and tumultuous journey of the impulsive Peer (Australian rising star Navrin Turnbull), who abandons his humble origins in search of adventure and glory. Peers travels take him through imaginative landscapes - from the mountains of Norway, through the kingdom of the trolls, to the deserts of North Africa only to return to Solveig (Alice Mariani), whose enduring love offers him a chance at redemption and meaning. Opera in three acts (1859)
Screening direct from Paris, an all-star new performance of Verdis lush and gripping drama. A masquerade ball may seem like the place to be for a party, but its costumes and disguises can also encourage intrigue. Verdis opera was inspired by the assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden at a ball in 1792. But to avoid the scandal of representing a regicide on stage, Verdi set the story in America, focusing on the impossible love between Riccardo (Matthew Polenzani), the governor of Boston, andAmelia (Anna Netrebko), the wife of his unforgiving best friend, Renato (Ludovic Tzier). Blending lightness and seriousness, Verdi's music was a hit from the moment it premiered in Rome in 1859. Director Gilbert Deflo keeps the American setting but moves it to the time of Lincoln to better confront the world of reason and morality with that of intuition and belief.
