Ballet in two acts (1892)
Encore screenings! As the ultimate romantic ballet Giselle wows audiences in Paris with another sold-out run, here's a chance to revisit a classic performance. The story begins like a fairy tale: a charming peasant girl Giselle (stunning toile Dorothe Gilbert) falls in love with Albrecht (Mathieu Ganio), whom she believes to be a simple villager, but who is actually a duke. However, Albrecht is already promised to someone else, and when Giselle discovers this, she goes mad and dies, joining the Wilisghostly girls betrayed by unfaithful lovers. Will Giselle seek revenge by luring Albrecht to his death, or will she let love and forgiveness triumph? First performed in 1841, the ballet by Jules Perrot and Jean Coralli marked a new era in Western dance. Pointe shoes, arabesques, and white tutus evoke a fantastical, diaphanous world that has become the very embodiment of romanticism.
